Pre-Factory PRS guitars are getting more scarce and more valuable every day. They are an investment and you’ll ALWAYS have the option to re-sell it for as much or more than you paid. PRS, Gibson, Fender and others can reproduce the specs of their early guitars, but the element of time puts true magic in a vintage guitar which cannot be duplicated in any factory for a quick over-the-counter sale.

You’ll look a long time to find a Paul Reed Smith guitar as rare as this one is. A Pearl White finish with bird inlays. The early pearl white mahogany Standard 24’s with moon inlays pop up occasionally but in 14 years of active buying and selling PRS guitars I’ve only ever seen two of these come up for sale. One of them was the original e-Bay listing from an NYC pawn shop in 2004, which posted this very guitar when it sold to the guy that I eventually bought it from. The other listing was an identical 1986 Pearl/Birds with a serial number close to this one, listed out of Australia. The Australian post was several years ago as well and I don’t know where that guitar ended up or if it even changed ownership at that time.

Guitars coming out of the factory in 2015 are sequentially numbered in the 215,000 range. This guitar is a classic vintage PRS collectable rock-n-roll machine, hand-build by the founding craftsmen of the company with a serial number in the 1100’s. Here are some things to keep in mind as you look at the pictures below.

• Serial number under 1200
• Rare Factory Original T&B pick-ups
• Original sweet switch and volume pot
• Original 5 way rotary with the rare early wiring, offering the “out-of-phase” waah-like tone in position 9
• Small neck heel
• One-piece Mil-Com bridge
• Low action and crunching tone
• Rare pearl white finish
• Only one other like it known to have come up for sale in the past 14 years.

This guitar has been played but remains in very good condition. There are some random nicks in the outer pearl coat but the pearl white finish that PRS applies to their guitars is extremely thick in comparison to other stains or coatings. There are layers of white undercoating or primer applied to prepare the surface prior to the thick pearl top coat. The guy that owned this guitar for the past 10 years somehow thought it was a good idea to put a sticker on the back. Buy a rare vintage guitar and then put a sticker on it?!?!? Good Plan! Why not? What could possibly happen?…. Sure enough, when he removed the sticker prior to shipping it out to me, a relatively small patch of the pearl coat lifted with it, exposing the white primer beneath. This area is in a place that is seldom seen, particularly not in performance on stage. The white undercoat minimizes the chance of anyone noticing as well. I’ve included several pictures of the back for reference. Some of them tilted in bright reflective light so you can see exactly where the area is and compare them to the full view pictures of the back for a better sense of how inconsequential the area is. Other than that there are some random bumps on or around the headstock as photographed. Some small ones on the lower side of the headstock go to the wood. At no time in its 28 year life have any touch-ups been conducted or attempted on this guitar. All things considered including the exposed primer on the back of the guitar as photographed, I’m perfectly comfortable with giving this early PRS vintage classic an 8.9 for over-all cosmetics. Review all of the photographs above and judge for yourself. Not bad for a 28 year old vintage guitar.

There is no evidence in the pick-up cavity of a maple cap but that does not necessarily mean that it isn’t there. The solid paint obscures the side wall of the cavity where you would be able to see the maple but historically (particularly in the early years) PRS only put birds inlays on maple top Custom model guitars. I suppose it could be a solid mahogany body but it does not sound or feel like it and I’ve owned a lot of them. This one weighs in at just about 8 pounds on the bathroom scale. There is very little evidence of any fret wear at all. Just some very slight, very even evidence of having been played, with no scallops or grooves. These early hand-made guitars from 1985-1987 come with stamped “T” & “B” pick-ups as photographed, which are becoming impossible to find elsewhere and sell for $800-$1000 per set if you wanted to find a set for one of your other guitars. They have distinct vintage tone and are worth every penny. In addition to the original “T” & “B” pick-ups, this guitar has the original sweet switch and the earliest version of the 5 way rotary, which offers the half cocked waah sound in position #9. I gigged this guitar for a couple of weekends before listing it. The pick-ups scream and the action is excellent.

Over-all, it has just enough play wear to make it playable. Stuff it in a closet if you want to but please, don’t be afraid to take it out every now and then or even to a gig. Too many of these vintage pieces sit lifeless in closets. An excellent strategy for vintage care but not what these beauties do best. Though I rely on one early (1988) CE-24 as my primary player 90% of the time, I often take one of my vintage PRS customs out to a bar and put in a set on them. These guitars have vintage magic in them and they should be played! It can be done carefully and responsibly. I have clear plastic static covers cut for the pick area and across the entire back of any guitar I take out to a club. Invisible. Inexpensive. Easy to use. Easy to care for. Provides thorough protection from surface scratches in the key area’s applied. You can’t expect to get away with bumping your guitar off mic stands or drum risers but I highly recommend these protectors for total prevention of common play wear. Whether you play this particular guitar or not, it will ALWAYS be worth more than you paid for it.

This is a beautiful, rock solid, vintage, collectable, playable classic with a serial number under 1200 in very good+ condition. Comes with non-original PRS hard case and the original tremolo bar.
